Main Street Board

In 2018, the City of Hahira and the Department of Community Affairs (DCA) entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to join the Georgia Main Street Program as an Affiliate.  Currently there are three (3) tiers for communities to participate in, which include Downtown Affiliate Network, Classic Main Street Program and Georgia's Exceptional Main Streets (GEMS).  The National Main Street Center's Accreditation Process evaluates local Main Street program according to 10 performance standards and provides national recognition to those that meet these standards.  The standards developed by the National Main Street Center (NMSC), in cooperation with the Georgia Main Street coordinating program, provide benchmarks and guidelines on how a Main Street revitalization program should optimally function.  Those 10 standards include:

(1) Broad-Based Community Support
(2) Vision and Mission Statements
(3) Comprehensive Work Plan
(4) Historic Preservation Ethic
(5) Active Board and Committees
(6) Adequate Operating Budget
(7) Paid Professional Staff
(8) Program of Ongoing Training
(9) Reporting of Key Statistics
(10) Main Street Network Membership

A key component for establishing a successful Main Street Program is through the creation of an active board.  The first City of Hahira Main Street Board was appointed by City Council on February 14, 2020 and consists of seven (7) members.  During 2020, the board will develop mission and vision statements, bylaws, district boundary, work plan and more to help further develop the existing Main Street program.

The Hahira Main Street Program is part of the Georgia Main Street Program, which began in 1980 as part of the National Main Street Inititative that was launched by the National Trust for Historic Preservation.  The City of Hahira joined the Georgia Main Street - Downtown Affiliate Network on August 7, 2018 and is proud to be one of the 100+ communities statewide that participate.  The Main Street concept is to encourage economic development alongside historic preservation in ways that are appropriate for today’s marketplace. Main Street programs support a return to community self-reliance, local empowerment and the rebuilding of traditional commercial districts based on their unique and individual assets - distinctive architecture, a pedestrian-friendly environment, personal service, local ownership and a sense of community.  The philosophy of the Main Street program is to develop a comprehensive strategy that is designed to meet local needs and opportunities by utilitizing the Four Point Approach:
  • Economic Vitality
  • Design
  • Promotion
  • Organization
